Instruction is provided by National Master Ian Harris. This class is designed for intermediate players. The focus of this course will be on mastering the most important aspects of pawn play at all stages of the game. Understanding how pawns influence strategy throughout the game is essential for improvement as pawns play a critical role from start to finish and in all aspects of attack and defense. Due to the importance of and the vast amount of material on the subject this class is divided into two sessions with each class building logically on the next.
Session 1 (9/1 - 10/20) will focus on determining strengths vs. weaknesses, identifying whether they are temporary vs. permanent, and specific strategies for combating existing weaknesses.
Session 2 (10/27 - 12/22) will focus on how to generate weaknesses, techniques for defending against strong pawns and other weaknesses, as well as some final games that provide comprehensive examples of the ideas discussed and how they are often combined.
Participants can register for either the first or second session or both. Open to adults only. Recommended for players rated approximately 1000-1400 (USCF).
